Too bad that those are the only people ever running for president regardless of party.

Yes it is too bad; shameful truly it is like puppeteers like Norquist, brothers Kooch and others have strings tied not only to their R Money but practically all of society. Not only Republicans but Democrats as well are handicappet in this fashion and society is at risk!

I have a lot of trouble picturing the way you think elections should work.  Your ideal system must be highly regulated and restricted, right?

Regulated in that no private money is employed for elections, yes. There is no other way to create a free election where Government serve the public. The other aspect would be no ad could be published/televised by any party without the oppositions rebuttal, preventing lies and deceptions.
