Two believeable, related explanations for why an IRA this size may be possible.   One from the WSJ, the other from TALKING POINTS MEMO:

What if every American did what Romney is doing?  Dose an American have any obligation to his/her country for living in a country with free schooling, good highways, water,  fire and police dept that keep you safe while you make this money and everyone was tax for? Can you imagine what if the greatest generation had been as big of cowards when fighting for our country and sent the money overseas that they made here like the  greedy selfish generation of Republican and even some Democrats do today.  When I grew up I felt and was raised by my parents to have an obligation to and for  my country, something that is missing today because we have become so greedy and selfish and feel we owe their country nothing.  kentay

You mean, what if every American obeys the Internal Revenue Code, as Romney did?  Life would be good!

When Mitt Romney was being vetted to be John McCain's VP he gave them 23 years of tax records. Why won't he release the same  tax records to the public when he wants to become our President? Is the reason he wasn't picked by McCain is because they saw something in his tax records they didn't like? How many ex-president have had multiple secret tax accounts  in foreign countries?  How many American Citizen have Foreign accounts and what if everyone did that to keep from paying their fare share of income taxes? We just seemed to have raised a generation of greedy selfish Americans that have absolutely no loyalty or concern for the country they made all their money in. kentay

Mitt Romney has so far released only one year of tax returns (2010), plus an estimate for 2011. This stands in stark contrast to his father, Michigan Governor George Romney, who released 12 years of tax returns when he began running for President in 1967. As his father said at the time, "One year could be a fluke." So the questions remain about what is in Romney's older returns.

Looks like he trying to hide something. I don't think any other president have had secret accounts oversea, he sure isn't a typical man of the people, now is he? LOL kentay

kentay, what do you actually KNOW about JFK's finances?  Or LBJ's?  [Or Mitt Romney's, for that matter!]

I have lived for 76 years been all over this country and the world and Romney is the only President and only person I have Known up close that had a overseas account. I was born and raised in Detroit and know the Romney's well and where they lived. His father was a really good man who could have become president he even marched with Dr. King and fought for equal rights. The reason he failed is he said the military brain washed him and that ended his quest for President I am sorry to say. Do you have a overseas account? kenaty

I own some foreign stocks but they are held in domestic accounts.  But, honestly, what do you know about JFK's finances?  Or LBJ's?

We turned over a real mess to President Obama, he hasn't cleaned it up fast enough, so give us another chance to  create a depression.
