In the late night hours (Eastern, Central time) the servers slow down and may time out your browser. It's probably the host owners doing server maintenance.
During the last database system upgrade, there was an actual denial of service with a recurring congratulatory upgrade notice instead of getting to this board. That was not malicious, just a snag in the system upgrade.
This boardware is Simple Machines Forum 2.0.1 and is in need of an upgrade, but there is a features issue with the latest version according to the host owners and given that they're not upgrading to the current version, we might occasionally experience database errors. Some of those I can fix via the Admin panel (got one of those today), but when access to the Admin panel is denied to me, I do have to consult with the SMFNew Support site and get them to fix it, which may take a while.
Briefly I had installed an IM Translator widget on the Portal for the convenience of our Russian members, which really slowed down Portal loading--but they have yet to show up to post and so I took it back off again, for now. Should I see a need for it again, I intend to install it again even though it slows down the portal, and so advise you to keep a copy of the link directly to the Forum so that you can bypass the Portal altogether.
