Is this wrong
« on: July 24, 2012, 03:03:13 pm »
I seen this on CBS the other night and I am reading the story.  This is one of the problems we have in this country that NEEDS to be solved.

Quote
(CBS News) Katie Medley, whose husband Caleb was shot in the eye during Friday's deadly movie theater rampage in Aurora, Colo., gave birth to a baby boy Tuesday in the same hospital where her spouse remains critically wounded.

A Colorado University Hospital spokesman said Hugo Jackson Medley was born at 7:11 a.m. and was "doing great" along with his mother.

Caleb Medley is one of 16 victims still hospitalized in the wake of the shooting, which left 12 dead and dozens more wounded.

The couple attended the midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in what was meant to be their last night out before they needed a babysitter.

Seth Medley says his brother, who is in intensive care and under heavy sedation, is in critical but stable condition and making some improvements in small steps, but added that doctors say he's not anywhere near out of the woods.

Caleb's family has been told his medical bills could total $2 million. But he lacks insurance, so childhood friend Michael West started a website to try to raise money.

So far, the site has raised more than $73,000 for Caleb and his family.

West said Caleb was looking forward to being a dad.

"We've talked about it, because we know he can hear us. He needs to get better, because he needs to be a dad. God. Jesus," West said through tears.

Even under heavy sedation, Caleb has somehow managed to make his friends and family feel just a little better.

"He will close his hands. He will squeeze, and he has given a thumbs-up," says Seth. "He's gonna fight through this so that he can be with his newborn son as much as possible."

"He's a strong guy," Seth says. "I'm not used to seeing him like that. I don't ever want to see him like that again."

A 2 MILLION dollar hospital Bill?  So he takes his wife to a movie theater, he gets shot, he misses his sons birth, and he may get a 2 MILLION dollar bill?  Is this American?????????

Ultimately somebody will pay the bill and it won't be the victim and it won't be the shooter.  It will be spread out among some large group of people, who exactly, I don't know.

I'm not going to concern myself with who should pay but rather why should medical care cost 2 million dollars.  I'm sure it will be expensive but 2 million dollars?

The cost of medical care is outrageous. I think the biggest reason is because of over regulation and lack of a free market.

I happen to agree that the cost of medical care is over priced.  It's just a shame that in the wake of a tragedy, the almighty dollar still makes it way into the picture

Health care cost per capita in the U.S. is about 100% higher than other advanced countries. And, I have seen no data that says the quality of care justifies this.

U.S. spending annual on physicians per capita is about five times higher than peer countries: $1,600 versus $310 in a sample of peer countries, a difference of $1,290 per capita or $390 billion nationally, 37% of the health care spending gap. These conclusions come from an analysis co-authored by Miriam Laugesen of the Columbia University School of Public Health and Sherry Gleid, an Assistant Secretary in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (source)**. The biggest driver of the gap is spending with specialist doctors, which is 3-6 times higher in the U.S. versus peers.  This difference is mainly due to much higher prices in the U.S., which are driven by both higher per-procedure rates paid by both public and private payers, and larger proportion of higher-paying private payers in the U.S. By comparison, public per visit rates for U.S. primary care doctors are at the high end of the range for peer countries and private rates are slightly above the range, and primary care doctor incomes are higher than peer countries, but less than half of the incomes of U.S. specialists. Primary care doctor utilization is comparatively low in the U.S., which keeps overall spending on primary care down. This is not good for overall health care costs

kentay nailed it. But kentay also nailed my main problem with Obamacare. What needs to happen is justice be done to the medical extortionists who demand not only your money but your children's money as well because they hold your life in their hands.

That ****'s just gotta stop.

That's not even remotely or fractionally true.

I haven't seen you support your own statement, actually. Unsupported fiat pronouncements don't work either.

It is totally true.  Do you actually believe that medical prices are the result of some private market mechanism??

The price of the medical is over rated.  I had to take a three mile ambulance ride.  I did not need oxygen or anything like that.  You know, that was the most expensive three mile trip I ever took.  I flew to my moms house cheaper and that was 2000 miles.

It's outrageous what they charge you with.

For a room they charged $399.00.  For a **** room?

Don,

Give this some thought.  Compare the the trend line of prices in the most highly regulated industries to the trend line of prices in unregulated industries.

Highly regulated: Health care, banking, finance, housing, cell phone service providers, etc.

Unregulated: Computer hardware, consumer electronics, cell phone manufacturers, etc.

It's pretty clear that heavy regulations come with heavy price increases.

Welcome to Obamacare!

Where do you suppose these absurd prices come from?  Do insurance companies actually pay them?  We know the government doesn't.
