What are the Polls Telling Us?
« on: August 10, 2012, 05:29:42 pm »
A number of polls have come out this week reporting that O has opened up a small but significant lead against Mitt Romney, especially in certain battleground states.  Gallup, however, today published the following job approval numbers:

http://www.gallup.com/poll/113980/Gallup-Daily-Obama-Job-Approval.aspx

Approve of O's performance:  43%
Disapprove:   51%

Is it really possible for an incumbent with ratings like that to secure reelection through negative campaigning?  Is there a precedent?

Those poll numbers show how disillusioned lefties and independents are with Obama's job performance but the voters at large consider Romney to be worse.

There aren't enough lefties to drive these polls.  I'm not disputing that you are accurately characterizing the lefties, but they make up only a small slice of the samples.

Ah!  That's better!

If the polls are accurate, it must be that independents ARE behaving as you describe, but when push comes to shove are they really going to say, "O is a bad President, but Romney is filthy rich," and vote to reelect as a result?

A reminder for kentay:
I fully support going back to ALL, that says ALL THE CLINTON TAX and spend policies that led to the economic boom in the second half of the 90's.

I don't know whose ass you pulled that conclusion out of, but bottom line is that it's ****. ;)

Elections are about voting for the better man. Polls say that Romney's not the better man.

That's a fact, but it's also a fact that Romney's clearly ashamed of that.

O's attack ads are basically going after the fact that Romney is insanely rich.

Let me put this another way and, mind you, I'm not trying to goad you on this.  Obama, unlike Clinton in 1994-1996, promises no policy adjustments whatsoever.  The stuff that hasn't worked for the past four years, Obama represents more of the same.  Everybody knows this, don't they.  So if Romney is an unappealing rich stiff, so what?

He's not the least ashamed of it.  He's proud of it.  His success is a reason to vote for him.

But only 43% approve of Obama's job performance.
Yes. Disillusionment abounds when Obama is evaluated alone.

When evaluated with Romney, Romney's worse.

That's what I said.

What about Romney do you think is being perceived as "worse"?  Is it his filthy richness... his unappealing personality... his flip-flopping... his general support for conservative policies... ?

His taking his money out of the U.S., his reticence to talk about how he got his money, his reticence on revealing his tax returns during those years when outsourcing got popular, his shaping of a company culture that continued after he resigned as the sole share-holder and head of Bain Capital, his flip-flopping...hell no, not flip-flopping...his hypocrisy with more than just footwear, his attitude toward women which is also part of his personal culture, the racist nature of the background he comes from when linked to his astonishing remark about Anglo Saxons....

....and that's all I can think of off the top of my head at the moment.
