1979 All Over Again
« on: September 12, 2012, 11:59:03 am »
Yesterday's events in Egypt and Libya, and the Obama Administration's response to them, certainly evokes a sickening sense of deja vu.

I think Obama's response to the attack in Libya is brilliant, actually.  Sending marines with drone authorization to patrol for militants and giving that info to the Libyan govt. with the expectation that Libya will attack its own militants, wedging a separation between militants and the Libyan government.

The security at the Libyan U.S. Embassy was held at a minimum by the ambassador himself, it turns out. Had he wanted higher security, he would have asked for it.

So, in this view, what was the strategic concept underlying the issuance of the now-withdrawn apology statement from the embassy in Cairo?

Timing. The statement was issued when the video came to light and before any protest was mobilized. And it's still a good statement. The embassy was attacked anyway, and Romney fired off his statement before stuff happened, too. It's like he was in on what the goal of the film was intended to do.

Admittedly, it's a good statement if you're opposed to free speech.  Oddly, however, the Obama Administration has renounced it.  What's that about?
